Indicators

This S is in need of some new indicators and a posting from dundarach in Pistonheads gave a possible alternative - from a Kia Pride. As my neighbour has a Kia I was able to borrow a lens and try it for size on my car.

Unit removed showing the size. The spacer ( arrowed ) can be removed and this gives the unit an overall thickness of 15mm.

Fitting The Indicators

Having purchased some indicator lenses it was a simple taks of fitting them.

Removing the old lens from the housing was achieved by cutting slots in the lens as shown below.

Next the outer pieces of plastic were removed by bending them inwards until the join broke. If they didn't want to easily seperate a shar chisel was slid into the join and the bond would usually crack. Take your time and wear eye protection because the lens plastic is very brittle.

To seal the new lens I tried 2 different approaches. On the first one I used foam rubber self adhesive strips. I'm not sure how well this will seal the unit. On the other I used window frame sealant that dries firm yet flexible. A small bead about 1-2mm cross was run round the indicator housing and the lens placed carefully on it and squeezed. This was left to set for 2 hours before being fitted to the car.
