The Green Car Project - August 2005

It's been all the little jobs to do this month on the car. Things like recovering the dash again because the glue used was useless. Properly fitting the dash, fitting the interior panels etc. One interesting problem to solve was the play in the rear wheel bearings. Turns out that the mating surfaces of the hub back plate had a thick coating of paint and this allowed the bearing to slide in its recess. Removing the old paint and a quick repaint solved that problem.

The nose cone was finally made so off to the factory to collect it plus a few other bits like gel coat for filling in the holes. Fitted the nose cone, made up a grille from some alloy mesh and bonded fixing lugs inside the nose. Fitted the micro indicators, number plate and finally fitted the wheel arches.

12-Aug. Played around with the carbs this morning so that it runs. Better but not 100% even at idle as it tends to miss a beat. Secured the battery with another bracket and aligned the steering wheel up. Filled the boot with tools and of to see Tony for a MOT.

Failed - before the car even made it into the test bay. This idiot fitted the front tyres on the wrong side and they're directional ones. Also failed on a loose upright ball joint - this wasn't one I'd checked. A couple of advisory notices for water leak and a short bolt and these are both resolved. The failure points were rectified immediately and a ticket issued.

Got home and replaced the coil pack and the plugs. Runs better at idle and sub 3k rpm but the rev counter doesn't seem to be correctly reading. So there are a few little jobs still to do but at least it is road legal.
