The Green Car Project - June 2005

This is the stage where all the jobs now seem to make little difference to the look of the car. First task this month was to fit a transducer for the speedo. The Racetech gauge works on a 833Hz signal for 100MPH. Working this number backwards, it requires 8 pulses per revolution of the prop shaft. While there is an adjuster on the back of the speedo this only adjusts the speed displayed so the mileage recorded will be inaccurate. I fitted a small toothed wheel made from thin steel to the first section of the prop shaft and made a bracket that attached to the gearbox to hold the transducer.

Having covered the dash last month it was fitted and the wiring was worked upon. The known trouble spots, which are the connector in line with the ignition switch and the loopback plug (where I assume one can add imobiliser circuits) have now been sorted. These connectors were replaced with butt crimps so should be no problem now. The hazard switch wiring had been extended from the center of the dash to the RH side of the steering wheel. Unfortunately the crimping of the joins was of very poor quality so all crimp connectors were replaced and new wiring added.

A more sucessful visit to a kit car show this month. Took the red Westfield up to Newark on one of the hottest days in June and went shopping for bits. Picked up a battery, radiator fan, grill mesh, rubber water piping and various other odds and ends.

Started building a Megajolt ignition controller. I'd built one for the Zetec engine but installed it in the red car but never installed the Zetec. It's still there running nicely on the CVH so I'm leaving it installed.
